ABOUT

Jason Christopher Burroughs is an oil painter, born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, home of one of America’s oldest art colonies. His landscapes and marine paintings are inspired by the impressionists that frequented Cape Ann in the early 1900’s. He aims to carry on the tradition of plein-air painters capturing the picturesque beauty of Gloucester, while telling a story of his life’s travels and experiences along the way.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My paintings and sketches are approximate, recorded observations of the people, places and things around me that I find inviting, or appealing. From my own unique perspective, familiar scenes and motifs are commemorated in my work. I discover compositions in nature, or design them in studio, with the intent of celebrating the subject matter. Using a limited palette, my colors are developed never planned, and more consideration is put into the tonal values of a painting maintaining an atmospheric quality. I enjoy the process of building a painting, the search for balance in a design or drawing leads me to decisions on mark making that I wouldn’t have made otherwise. My brushstrokes and application arrive from the study, and my appreciation for a piece of work that shows evidence of its creation.
